Getting to Know Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

What You Can Expect If You Or Your Child Comes to Me For Therapy

I utilize evidence-based, cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT. More specifically, I typically use a type of CBT called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT has been effectively used with a number of clinical disorders for children and adults. It is based on the idea that attempts to change or control some problems may make them worse.

Therefore visits to my office will include changing things that can be changed, through techniques like social skills training, anger and time management, mindfulness, and/or cognitive reappraisal, depending on your concerns, as well as acceptance work for the things that cannot be changed.

ACT work is based upon the idea that people are whole and that they have everything they need to live meaningful lives. Sometimes we all get stuck. I am here to help. If you want to learn more about ACT, you can check it out here: https://contextualscience.org/about_act

It's  important to know that therapy is not like waving a magic wand. It is not a quick fix. It usually feels like hard work for at least six to eight sessions, and you may feel worse before you (or your child) gets better. Therapy is a long-term healing process that requires collaboration between the patient and clinician. I will work hard for you and will compassionately expect you to work hard for yourself.
